Gutters Blocked Again in the Macleay Valley?
Kempsey has some of the oldest roofs on the Mid North Coast. The federation and heritage timber homes through town and down at Gladstone carry original terracotta, and in places slate, with deep valleys and long gutter runs designed for a gentler climate than the Macleay delivers. When a big storm rolls down the valley it strips the trees and dumps the lot straight into those gutters, and the floodplain humidity turns whatever lands there into a mouldy, compacted mess.
Out on the coast the story changes but the problem does not. The fibro shacks at Crescent Head and newer brick homes at South West Rocks collect banksia and tea-tree litter instead, with salt eating any cheap guard fitted over it. Steel leaf guard suits both worlds, keeping the water moving and the debris out.
The Case for Proper Leaf Guard
Hard-wearing steel mesh, fitted with the care older roofs demand.
Fitted to suit the roof in front of us, whether that is heritage terracotta in Gladstone or new brick at South West Rocks, valleys and box gutters included.
Steel mesh that handles the inland heat of the Macleay and the salt at Crescent Head without cracking or sagging.
Denies embers the dry leaf bed they need, a real consideration on the rural blocks and bush edges through the valley.
Seals the gutter line so birds and possums cannot get established in the roof of an older home, where entry points are easy to find.
Storm debris washing down the valley stays out of the gutters, so heavy rain leaves through the downpipes instead of the ceiling.
High, steep heritage roofs are exactly the ones you do not want to climb. With mesh fitted, you rarely need to.
Done Once, Done Properly
Older roofs punish shortcuts. Mesh fixed carelessly to hundred-year-old terracotta cracks tiles and creates leaks worse than the leaves ever did. David brings decades of heritage roof experience, so the guard goes on with the right fixings in the right places and the roof underneath stays sound.

Leaf Guard Installation FAQs
Answers to the questions we get asked most.
Leaf guard is steel mesh fitted over the top of gutters and valleys, letting rain through while blocking leaves, twigs and storm debris. In the Macleay Valley, where storms regularly load gutters with stripped foliage, it keeps water draining properly and protects ceilings and walls from overflow.
Yes, by a long way. The compacted, mouldy leaf sludge that builds up in Kempsey and Gladstone gutters simply cannot form once mesh keeps the material out. Some fine sediment gets through over the years, but you are looking at an occasional check rather than a regular climb.
It does help. Steel mesh denies embers the dry leaf bed they need to take hold, and the mesh itself will not burn. For rural properties through the Macleay and homes backing coastal scrub near Crescent Head, ember-rated options are available.
All-steel mesh only, because plastic guard fails quickly in the Macleay’s heat and coastal salt. On heritage roofs we are careful with fixings so old terracotta and slate are not damaged, and David selects a mesh profile to suit the roof’s age and pitch.
Yes, the whole Macleay Valley. Kempsey, West Kempsey, Frederickton, Smithtown, Gladstone, South West Rocks and Crescent Head are all in the service area. Tile, slate and metal roofs are all fine, and quotes cost nothing.
