Valley Heat Cooking Your Roof Space?
Summer out on the Macleay floodplain is genuinely hot, and a closed roof cavity in Kempsey or Frederickton can run well above the outside temperature by mid afternoon. That stored heat radiates through the ceiling into the rooms below long after sunset, which is why the house never seems to cool down.
The valley holds moisture too. The same humid air that hangs over the river flats after rain finds its way into roof spaces, and in the district’s older timber and federation homes it condenses against terracotta and timber that were never built with sarking. Ventilation gives that moist air a way out before mould gets a start.
The Right Vents For Your Roof
David has ventilated everything from heritage terracotta to modern metal over 30 years, and he sizes each system for the Macleay's heat and damp.
The turbine spins whenever there is a breath of wind, drawing heat out through the ridge. Silent, unpowered and the most economical starting point for most homes.
Fan-forced extraction for big or baking-hot cavities. Solar units run free off the sun, while powered models keep working after dark.
Passive vents at the eaves feed fresh air in while ridge outlets let the hot air escape, setting up a constant flow through the entire roof.
Valley humidity settles into sealed cavities and feeds mould on the timbers. Ventilation carries the moist air away before it can do damage.
The job starts in the roof cavity, not a brochure. David checks insulation, heat load and damp spots first, then recommends the smallest setup that will genuinely fix the problem.
Cutting holes in a sound roof deserves care. Each vent goes in with proper flashing and sealant, so the next storm rolling down the Macleay finds no new way inside.

Roof Ventilation FAQs
Answers to the questions we get asked most.
David installs roof ventilation in Kempsey, West Kempsey, Frederickton, Smithtown and Gladstone, and out to the coast at South West Rocks and Crescent Head, on tile and metal roofs alike.
They make a real difference. On a hot valley day the sealed cavity above your ceiling can be far hotter than the air outside, and that heat keeps flowing into the house well into the night. Extracting it means cooler rooms and less work for the air conditioner.
Often, yes. Warm air from heaters and showers rises into the roof, hits the cold underside of the tiles or sheeting and turns to water. In an unventilated cavity that moisture soaks the insulation and stains the timber. Airflow removes it before it settles.
Roof size and heat load decide it. Smaller cavities with decent breeze exposure do well with a whirlybird or two, while larger or hotter roofs justify a solar or powered fan that extracts air regardless of wind. David will size it up during the inspection.
No. The inspection and the quote are free with no obligation. David looks at the roof, tells you plainly what it needs, and the written price stands.
