Is It Time to Replace Rather Than Repair?
Roofs in the Macleay Valley age from two directions at once. Inland around Kempsey, West Kempsey and Frederickton, the summer heat bakes coatings and dries out old fixings, while the flood-adjacent damp that hangs over the river flats feeds mould and rot in roofs that no longer seal. The heritage timber and federation homes through town and down at Gladstone often carry original terracotta, and some still carry slate, so the roof up there can be older than anyone living under it.
Out at the coast the story changes but the ending is the same.
