Has the pointing on your old terracotta ridge given up?
Kempsey has some of the oldest roofs on the Mid North Coast. The federation homes around West Kempsey and Gladstone carry terracotta ridge lines that were pointed generations ago, and the Macleay’s inland heat has long since baked that cement to powder. Out at Crescent Head and South West Rocks it is the salt doing the same job.
When a big storm rolls down the valley, the loose caps shift and water follows the ridge straight into the ceiling. We rebed the capping in fresh mortar and repoint with a flexible compound, and with our heritage roof experience the older terracotta is handled with the care it needs.
What we do when we repoint your roof
Wherever you are on the Macleay, from Kempsey and Frederickton out to South West Rocks and Crescent Head, the job follows these steps.
Loose caps come up, the tired bedding is scraped back, and everything is relaid in fresh mortar so the line runs straight and firm.
Flexible pointing goes over the new bedding. Unlike brittle cement it gives a little with every temperature swing, so the seal holds.
If we spot fractured tiles while working the ridge, we change them over then and there so the finished job has no weak points.
A sound ridge keeps storm water out of the roof cavity, protecting ceilings and timbers and stretching the life of the whole roof.
The pointing colour is matched carefully to your ridge caps and tiles, so a repaired roof on an older Kempsey home still looks original from the footpath.
Rebedding is messy work, but none of the mess stays behind. Broken mortar is bagged and taken away, and paths and garden beds are checked before we leave.

Roof Repointing FAQs

Yes. We work in Kempsey, West Kempsey, Frederickton, Smithtown and Gladstone, and out to the coast at South West Rocks and Crescent Head. Close by but not on that list? Just ask.
It plays a big part. Inland heat bakes rigid cement until it turns brittle, and the storms that roll down the valley then shift the loosened caps. A flexible pointing compound absorbs that movement instead of cracking.
Rebedding resets the ridge caps on a fresh bed of mortar. Repointing is the flexible seal applied over the top of that bedding. On the older roofs around the Macleay the two usually go together, and we do both in one visit.
Repointing only applies to tile roofs, where ridge caps sit on mortar. A metal roof seals its ridge differently. If you are not sure which you have, send through a photo and we will point you in the right direction.
The main factors are the lineal metres of capping, the access and the state of the existing mortar. Rather than guess, get David out for a free quote and you will have a firm figure up front.
