Is old ridge cement letting your roof down?
Walk the streets of Westport or up towards Shelly Beach and most of the brick-and-tile homes you see went up in the seventies and eighties, and a fair few are still carrying their original ridge cement. Between the salt haze that drifts in off Town Beach and Lighthouse Beach and forty-odd years of sun, that mortar has gone brittle and started letting go.
Once it cracks, every east coast low that pushes wind-borne rain across Port Macquarie finds the gap. Caps loosen, water tracks along the ridge and stains turn up on the ceiling. We rebed the caps in fresh mortar and finish with flexible pointing that handles the coastal movement instead of splitting like the old cement.
What we do when we repoint your roof
We rebed and repoint tile roofs right across Port Macquarie, taking in Wauchope, Lake Cathie, Thrumster and everywhere in between.
Any caps that have moved or worked loose come off and go back down on a fresh mortar bed, straight and solid along the line.
The joints are finished with flexible pointing compound, which stretches as the roof heats and cools rather than cracking away like rigid cement.
Cracked or slipped tiles near the ridge get swapped for sound ones during the same visit, so nothing is left to let water in.
With the caps bedded and pointed properly, water stops getting under the ridge and your tile roof gains years of life without a major spend.
The new pointing is colour-matched to the caps and tiles around it, so the finished ridge looks like it was always that tidy rather than freshly patched.
Every scrap of old bedding and cracked tile is brought down, bagged and taken away, and we sweep the gutters clear of mortar crumbs before leaving.

Salt haze from the beaches, humid summers and the odd east coast low all attack rigid mortar. Around Port Macquarie old cement cracks well before its time, so we seal ridges with a flexible compound made for that movement.
If the house went up in the seventies or eighties, the original cement pointing is likely well past its best. It is worth an inspection before the next big blow, because resealing the ridge now is far cheaper than chasing ceiling leaks later.
