Does Your Kempsey Roof Need Rescuing?
A hundred-year-old terracotta tile is rarely the problem around Kempsey. It is the bedding underneath that gives out. The federation homes through town and Gladstone still carry their original ridge mortar, and once it crumbles the caps loosen, the storms that barrel down the Macleay Valley lift them further, and water starts tracking into ceilings that stayed dry for generations. Out at Crescent Head and South West Rocks the story is salt rather than age, eating at flashings and fixings on the beach-side roofs.
Replacing a roof like that throws away tiles with decades left in them. A restoration keeps what is good, renews the bedding, pointing and coating, and costs a long way less than starting again from bare rafters.
What We Do to Restore a Roof
The inspection decides how much time each stage needs. A federation roof in West Kempsey and a newer brick home at South West Rocks call for different emphasis, but the sequence holds.
David goes over the tiles, ridge lines, valleys and flashings in person, checking how much of the original bedding on the older Kempsey and Gladstone roofs is still doing its job, then puts a fixed price in writing.
Broken tiles are matched and replaced, including sourcing tiles to suit heritage roofs, and storm-hit sections are made sound before any sealing begins.
The mould and grime that build up in the floodplain's humid air are blasted off, taking the roof back to clean tile ready for treatment.
Century-old ridge mortar is cut out and the capping re-bedded, then re-pointed with a flexible compound that stays put when the next storm rolls down the valley.
A steriliser wipes out the moss and mould spores the Macleay's damp encourages, and a sealer coat readies porous old tiles for the membrane.
The finish is a Dulux Acra-Tex membrane in your colour, tough enough for the inland heat over town and the salt out at South West Rocks.
Our Roof Restoration Process
Once the repairs and preparation are done, the roof is finished in Dulux Acra-Tex, applied to specification under our accreditation. It is a membrane with the flexibility to handle the valley's baking summers and the storms that follow them.

Roof Restoration FAQs
Answers to the questions we get asked most.
On most of the valley’s older homes, comfortably. The terracotta on a federation roof in Gladstone or West Kempsey is often still sound, and it is the bedding, pointing and surface that have expired. A restoration renews exactly those parts at a fraction of the cost of a new roof. Replacement only earns its price when the structure itself has gone.
A few days is standard, stretching a little where an older roof needs extensive re-bedding or tile matching. The coating stages depend on dry weather to cure, so a storm rolling down the valley can add a day. David sets out the expected timeframe with your quote and keeps you posted himself.
Expect ten to fifteen years as a baseline, with the premium systems we use regularly going beyond it. The inland heat over town ages a surface differently to the salt at Crescent Head, so where you live shapes the answer, as does keeping the roof reasonably clean along the way.
Yes, and they are some of the most rewarding roofs to restore. David is licensed as a slater as well as a roof tiler, which matters on the older homes around Kempsey and Gladstone. The exceptions are roofs where the tiles themselves are delaminating or the frame has moved, and the inspection sorts those out honestly before any money changes hands.
In the great majority of cases. Around here leaks usually start where old bedding has crumbled or a flashing has corroded, and both are repaired as part of the restoration before the sealing and coating go on. Should the water be getting in through a structural fault instead, David tells you up front rather than coating over it.
