Is Your Manning Valley Roof Due for a Restoration?
The steep terracotta roofs on the federation homes of Wingham and Gloucester were built to shed weather fast, but the rigid mortar under their ridge caps has been cracking loose for decades, and every gap it opens is a path for water. Down on the flats, Taree’s older brick homes have a different complaint: river fog and damp mornings keep concrete tiles wet long enough for moss to dig in, well after the original factory surface has worn away.
In either case the roof itself is usually worth saving. A restoration re-beds what has moved, cleans off the growth and seals the surface again, delivering years more service without the bill for a full re-roof.
How a Restoration Comes Together
Every roof moves through the stages below, with the balance set by the inspection. Heritage terracotta in Wingham leans on the re-bedding stage, while a mossy Cundletown roof needs the cleaning done hard.
David inspects the whole roof himself, tiles, capping, valleys and flashings, paying close attention to ridge mortar on the older Wingham and Gloucester homes, and quotes a fixed price in writing.
Cracked, slipped and frost-affected tiles are replaced, and worn valleys or flashings on the exposed coastal roofs at Old Bar are renewed before sealing.
Moss fed by the fog that settles over the river flats around Taree and Cundletown is stripped off under pressure, back to a surface the coating can hold.
Failed bedding is replaced and the capping re-pointed in flexible compound, ending the cycle of cracking mortar on the valley's steep terracotta roofs.
A sterilising treatment stops moss and lichen regrowing under the new surface, then the roof is sealed ahead of coating.
Dulux Acra-Tex membrane goes on in your chosen colour, with the flexibility to ride out Gloucester's cold snaps and the coastal weather at Manning Point.

If the frame and most of the tiles are sound, restoration wins on value nearly every time, renewing the roof for a fraction of what a rebuild costs. That covers the majority of the valley’s homes, from federation terracotta in Wingham to post-war brick in Taree. Where a roof genuinely is past it, David says so at the inspection instead of selling you a coating.
Two to four days covers most homes, though steep heritage roofs needing full re-bedding can run longer, and every coating stage waits for dry conditions rather than being rushed. The timeframe comes written into your quote, and because David runs the job himself you always know where it stands.
Ten to fifteen years is the sensible expectation, often more with the premium membranes we use. Exposure sets the pace: a beach house at Old Bar or Manning Point wears faster than a sheltered street in town, and Gloucester’s frosts test a coating differently again. Basic upkeep, like keeping the moss off, adds years at the far end.
Usually, yes. Steepness is a working-at-heights question, not a restoration barrier, and David is licensed and equipped for the valley’s heritage pitches. The genuine dealbreakers are tiles that have gone soft right through or a roof frame that has sagged, and a proper inspection picks those up before you spend a cent.
Almost always, since the usual sources around here, cracked ridge mortar, broken tiles and rusted valley irons, are exactly what the repair and re-pointing stages fix before the coating seals everything. That order matters: the leak is cured, not hidden. A leak caused by structural movement is the exception, and you hear about it from David first.
